Student Life Staff Changes

Please congratulate the following staff!

• Kyle Patterson is our new director of Housing and Residence Life.
• Jawoin Williams is our new assistant director of Housing and Residence Life.
• Jill Adams will be our new assistant dean of students/Title Nine coordinator, effective July 1.
• Jamie Walker will officially join the Student Life team as our chief of safety and security, effective July 1.
• Rodney Harper will officially join the Student Life team as our mail room supervisor, effective July 1.
• Tammy Jackson will join the Student Life team as our operations coordinator, effective July 10.

Bailey Named Baseball Head Coach

Please welcome Drew Bailey as Averett’s new baseball head coach! Bailey comes to Averett following three seasons as an assistant coach at Bluefield College.

During his time at Bluefield, an NAIA school, Bailey served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator while assisting with hitters and catchers. In each season, his pitching staff totaled more than 300 strikeouts. Twice the Rams qualified for the NCCAA Tournament, earning a bid in the NCCAA College World Series in 2015 and 2017.

Outside of baseball, Bailey also served as the head coach of Bluefield’s men’s and women’s cross country programs.

Bailey completed his bachelor’s degree from Concord in 2015. A native of Christiansburg, Va., he joins the Averett family, along with his wife, Lexi, and children Paxton and Reagan. To learn more about Bailey, click here.

GPS Student Spotlight

Throughout the month, the Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) admissions team interviews and highlights our GPS students. We hope you will enjoy learning more about these amazing members of our Averett family!

Today, meet Cherita Hare, who is pursuing her bachelor of business administration. She is expected to graduate in 2018.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree? “My motivation for obtaining my degree comes from a promise within myself to prove that I am a valued person and can accomplish any goal I set forth.”

Why did you choose Averett’s Graduate & Professional Studies Program? “I chose Averett University because it fit precisely into my busy life schedule. I am employed full-time and the GPS program allows me to attend school as a full-time student with a target completion date for graduation. Choosing this degree program with the assistance of my education counselor was a very smooth process. My counselor worked with me in coordinating my classes to fit my busy lifestyle. The GPS program also allows me to attend school on a continuous, course-to-course program.”

Please share one tip for your fellow classmates and future AU students. “One tip I would share is to continue to dream and work on your goal that you set and make a promise to yourself to reach the finish line. Obstacles will always be lurking; one must always remain strong, steadfast and unmovable. Climb that mountain and stay on the path. If you fall, get up and continue until you reach your destiny and never give up.”

What helps to keep you motivated while you are in the program? “My personal determination remains to be my motivation in accomplishing this goal that has been in the making for quite a while. My classmates are all incredible individuals and always share encouraging words with and for one another.”

A Timesheet Change This Week

Since Averett has generously given us an additional holiday leave on Monday, July 3, please turn in your timesheets on Friday, June 30, (or Saturday, July 1, if you are working Saturday). We must have payroll uploaded to the bank on Wednesday, July 5, in order to get you paid that Friday, July 7. As usual, approved timesheets should be sent to [email protected].

Unpaid Invoices and Year End

Our year end of June 30 is rapidly approaching. This means that we have to close our books for our annual financial audit, which begins the third week of July. We need as few invoices outstanding at the end of June as possible. If you must make a June purchase, press the vendor for an invoice right away. We must have all invoices in the system no later than July 15. If the vendor can’t get you an invoice by July 10, wait until July 1 to make the purchase so it will go into the next fiscal year.
