GPS Student Spotlight

Throughout the month, the Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) admissions team interviews and highlights our GPS students. We hope you will enjoy learning more about these amazing members of our Averett family!

Today, meet Jonathan Balko, who is pursuing his bachelor of business administration degree. He is expected to graduate in 2018.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree? “My immediate family. Obtaining a degree will not only allow progression in my career field, this degree will be an example for my children as well.”

Why did you choose Averett’s Graduate & Professional Studies Program? “Averett University offered the bachelor’s program I was most interested in. Having a satellite campus location near work (Marine Corps Base Quantico) makes for convenience. Colleagues have also told me how great Averett’s program and professors are.”

Please share one tip for your fellow classmates and future AU students. “One tip I would share to fellow classmates (on campus) would be to use your Moodle account. This allowance of interaction among classmates and professors ensures information and assignments are understood. Always have your syllabus on hand.”

What helps to keep you motivated while you are in the program? “Knowing that I’m continually getting closer to graduation and a short term goal of mine. My wife, Heather, has also been very supportive of my attendance as a ground student and provides the extra assurance that I will be able to get assignments completed on time.”

Residence Life On-Call

The Student Life Department has updated the residence life on-call number. The new number is (434) 203-7245. Please make the necessary updates. If you have any questions, please contact Lesley Villarose, dean of students, at [email protected].

Service Year Fellowships

The Center for Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness (CCECC) at Averett is looking for recent Averett graduates to fill two fellowship positions. Do you know a young alumnus who wants to engage in a year of service? The CCECC is partnering with the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County for the first-of-its-kind service year fellowships. Fellows will serve one year in the locality, and a monthly stipend will be provided. More information can be found by clicking here. For other questions, please contact Alexis Ehrhardt at [email protected] or (434) 791-7212.

2017-18 Middle Border Forward Fellowship

The Middle Border Forward (MBF) Fellowship Program is accepting applications for its next round of Fellows. The program was designed to foster emerging leaders throughout the region. Candidates are selected to participate in a year-long learning and leadership growth process.

The Fellows engage in exercises, sessions, and other activities to become more connected with their peers to learn the history of how the region came to be, to address challenges, to preserve the assets of the region, and to grow as future leaders.

The program culminates with Fellow-designed independent change initiatives to address one of MBF’s six Areas of Focus. Interested applicants can apply here until Aug. 11, at 5 p.m.
